From research to productLife is not
the only requirement.
A postbiotic is a preparation of inactivated microorganisms, or their components, with a demonstrated benefit in the host. [1]
The ISAPP definition connects identity and evidence. An accidentally dead microorganism is insufficient; a purified metabolite alone falls outside its scope. The preparation must be characterised and its benefit verified in the target population.
Live microorganisms with a demonstrated benefit.
Inactivated preparation with a demonstrated benefit.
A molecule is not equivalent to a microbial preparation.

Preparation
Inactivated cells and characterised components.
Intestinal interface
Interactions with epithelium and immune signalling.
Biological response
Barrier function, inflammatory tone and metabolic signals.
Clinical verification
Endpoints, population and placebo comparison.
Editorial diagram based on the ISAPP consensus. Mechanisms may differ between preparations; plausibility does not establish finished-product efficacy. [1]
Two trials.
Two different questions.
Weight maintenance and insulin sensitivity require separate interpretations.
Less weight regain
after a structured diet.
90 adults with overweight or obesity. After 8 weeks of a low-energy diet and ≥8% weight loss, 24 weeks of maintenance with pasteurised Akkermansia muciniphila Mucᵀ or placebo. [3]
weight regain
Calculated as 3.2 − 1.2 kg. A result in this trial context, not a weight-loss promise for the general population.
Mount / 2026
Weight regain after a diet
Favourable signal in the studied protocol. [3]
Suenaert / 2026
Insulin sensitivity
No difference on primary endpoint; exploratory subgroups. [4]
Pedret / 2019 · n = 135
Abdominal adiposity biomarkers
Signals with the inactivated form; not transferable to other strains. [5]
An important pilot.
Keep it in perspective.
40 participants enrolled, 32 completed across the three groups; 3 months. Results are not averages for the whole postbiotic category.
Reported difference versus placebo · ±7.02 · p = 0.002
Favourable change in the pilot. Not an individual prediction.
Weight change in the pilot (−2.27 kg versus placebo) did not reach statistical significance: p = 0.091. Different endpoints are not interchangeable measures of efficacy. [2]
The active extends
beyond the strain name.
Four steps to verify before transferring a study into a formula. Select a stage.
The strain comes before the category.
A species name does not describe the preparation. Require strain code, origin, composition and batch traceability.
GMA due diligence questions · editorial interpretationInactivation may simplify some viability constraints; it does not guarantee stability, safety or clinical equivalence. CFU measure viability: they are not automatically the correct functional unit for an inactivated preparation. [1]
Authorisation, safety,
claims: three checks.
Updated conditions of use
for pasteurised Akkermansia
Regulation (EU) 2026/391 updates use and labelling conditions for pasteurised Akkermansia muciniphila. Conditions depend on population and food category: the operational reference is the applicable Union list entry and its specifications. [6]
Scientific consensus on postbiotics does not create a category-wide authorisation. A safety assessment does not by itself authorise a weight or glucose claim. Commercial wording requires a separate claim and product check.
The 2021 EFSA opinion is a historical reference for the specific preparation. Current use also requires checking subsequent updates. [7]

that supports a decision.
Ask for the exact preparation
Strain, process, composition, dose and matrix must make the link to the study understandable.
Define what is measured
Identity, inactivation, contaminants, potency and stability require documented methods and acceptance criteria.
Choose a concrete question
Weight maintenance and glucose metabolism are distinct applications. The studied population narrows the message.
Keep the primary result visible
Separate primary endpoints, biomarkers and subgroups. Do not generalise from species to category or from trial to product.
The industrial opportunity is a reproducible preparation, relevant evidence and a proportionate message.

Charts redrawn from published values without reconstructing individual trajectories. The 2026 comparison shows final means; the pilot lets readers explore three separate endpoints. Differences between trials are not a direct efficacy comparison.
The cited trials include industry involvement: consult funding and conflicts of interest in the publications. Formulation considerations and due diligence questions are GMA editorial interpretations.
