Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1306 authorises rhamnogalacturonan-I enriched carrot extract produced from carrot pomace through enzymatic processing and purification. The act applies from 2 July 2026 and adds the novel food to the Union list.

For five years, placing the ingredient on the market is restricted to data owner NutriLeads B.V. unless an independent application or agreement applies. Authorised uses include supplements for people over three, foods for special medical purposes and selected yogurt analogues and drinks.

The regulatory step does not automatically validate the brand’s gut- or immune-health positioning. Communication, product dose, population and claims must be assessed separately from safety authorisation.

Why it matters

It is a concrete precedent for upcycled prebiotic ingredients: identity, process, composition and use levels become integral to market-access strategy.

Evidence limit

The authorisation concerns safety and conditions of use, not microbiome or immunity claims. The EU supplement ceiling of 1,500 mg/day is not an efficacy dose.
