Of the new initiators, 53% had no recorded GLP-1 use in the preceding twelve months. The analysis describes treatment initiation and does not measure clinical or nutritional outcomes.
Initial prescriptions for the oral route
Early US data on oral semaglutide describe the first phase of adoption. Published on 7 October in JAMA Network Open, the analysis identifies 148,792 new initiators with a recorded prescription between 22 December 2025 and 15 March 2026. The population comprises adults eligible for pharmacological obesity management who did not have type 2 diabetes.
New initiators and previous treatment
Among these initiators, 53% had no recorded GLP-1 use in the preceding twelve months. This helps distinguish people entering treatment from those previously prescribed a drug in the same class. Health records document prescribing, however; establishing actual use, persistence and clinical response requires additional information.
Questions for nutritional support
For nutraceutical development, the relevant question concerns nutritional support during these therapies. Prescription counts describe uptake, while diet, nutritional status and body composition define the needs of people receiving treatment. As the study does not measure these outcomes, potential deficiencies or muscle loss need dedicated assessment before they can guide product development.
The data help describe adoption of the oral route. Nutritional support during treatment also requires information on diet, nutritional status and body composition.
A descriptive retrospective study of US health records. Recorded prescriptions alone do not establish actual use or adherence.
