Anthropic has opened the Model Hardware Standard research preview to an initial group of laboratories and manufacturers. Developed initially with HHMI Janelia Research Campus, MHS defines drivers with common primitives such as read and write and describes the capabilities of each device in a standard format.

The proposal is model-agnostic and can be accessed by agents through protocols including the Model Context Protocol. It is intended to orchestrate microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms and other instruments in parallel while surfacing physical and operating information usually left in manuals or tacit knowledge.

Industrial value will depend on control quality. Granular permissions, safety limits, logging, emergency stopping, error handling and experimental validation must work reliably before this integration layer becomes laboratory infrastructure.

Why it matters

For nutraceutical R&D, a shared hardware layer could connect experimental planning, execution and traceability without a bespoke integration for every instrument.

Evidence limit

A limited-access preview, not yet a widely validated open standard. Safety, interoperability and accountability for autonomous experiments remain to be demonstrated.
