In the randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial, 75 healthy adults aged 55–70 consumed maltodextrin or maltodextrin with 30 billion CFU/day of P. acidilactici PA53 for eight weeks. Faecal microbiota and serum biomarkers were assessed at baseline and completion.

Authors describe favourable changes in happiness, gastrointestinal-symptom and sleep scales in the PA53 group, together with lower IL-6 and TNF-alpha and shifts in the relative abundance of several microbial genera.

The result is strain-specific and cannot establish a probiotic category effect. Sample size, duration, multiple endpoints and questionnaire-based outcomes call for larger replication, clearly prespecified between-group testing and longer follow-up.

Why it matters

The study broadens the positioning of a probiotic strain beyond digestive health by connecting the gut–brain axis with ageing in a defined human population.

Evidence limit

A small, short study with several self-reported endpoints in healthy adults. It does not show prevention of cognitive decline or transferability to other strains.
