Analysis of NHANES cycles from 2009 to 2023 shows adult probiotic-supplement use rising from 1.8% to 6.96%. Among people under 20, it moved from 0.63% to 5.58%.
Average fibre intake did not increase significantly over the same period. Probiotic users nevertheless tended to consume more fibre and high-microbial-quality foods than non-users.
The data describe parallel trends but do not prove that supplements replaced diet. For industry, they support designing and communicating products in the context of fibre, foods and strain specificity.
The gap signals space for education, prebiotics and synbiotic design that connects the microorganism with substrate and overall diet quality.
