Twenty-four elite male combat-sport athletes were randomised to a sports probiotic blend at 1.5 × 10¹⁰ CFU twice daily or placebo during four weeks of pre-competition weight loss.

The intervention group showed fewer gastrointestinal symptoms, reductions in zonulin, intestinal fatty acid-binding protein and D-lactate, higher secretory IgA and modulation of taxa associated with butyrate production.

The formulation interest lies in the alignment between context and endpoints: the blend was tested during a defined physiological stress rather than in a generic population. This can inform more relevant protocols for athlete products.

Blend, dose, duration and population are part of the result. Comparisons among strains, inclusion of female athletes, larger samples and better hydration markers are needed before extending the finding to the category.

Why it matters

The study suggests a development model for sports nutrition that connects population, competition phase, dose, barrier markers and microbiological endpoints.

Evidence limit

Small male-only sample and a specific blend: results cannot be assigned indiscriminately to any probiotic strain or product.
