The study links frontal-lobe tau pathology with loss of coordinated slow-wave propagation during NREM sleep. Tau was measured with PET in one cohort and replicated through cerebrospinal-fluid markers in a second cohort.
More isolated, non-travelling slow waves were associated with poorer overnight memory retention. The finding shifts attention from sleep duration alone towards cortical architecture and coordination.
The design does not establish causal direction. It does not show that a supplement, device or sleep intervention can lower tau or prevent cognitive decline.
The work makes the bridge between sleep health and brain ageing more specific and points to endpoints beyond sleep-onset time.
An observational study with small samples. Replicated associations do not establish causality or show that improving slow waves alters Alzheimer’s progression.
